The forthcoming Robert Glasper Experiment album – ‘Black Radio’ will draw from elements of Hip-hop, RnB, Jazz and Rock, yet is hard to describe merely with labels, such is its diversity. The Houstonian producer/Jazz Pianist embarks upon an ambitious new project that will feature many of his past associates including: Lupe Fiasco, Bilal, Mos Def, Musiq Soulchild and Erykah Badu.
Growing up in an extremely musical background, Glasper, whose mother was a blues singer, developed his own style and melody that is vividly apparent in his music. He has since worked with some of the most innovative names in Hip-hop and Jazz, and boasts on his CV an extensive working relationship with Q-Tip on his album – ‘The Rennasiance’.
Glasper’s 5th album is his most ardent yet. What excites me the most about this LP is how the collaborating artists will interact with this array of beats. As you can hear from the eponymous track below, Mos Def’s (or whatever he’s calling himself these days) erratic style really works well with the wobbly bass guitar and unpredictable drum-patterns.
“I wanted to do a record that showcased the fact that we play with artists in other genres……more of an urban, hip-hop, soul kind of vibe, but the spine of it all is still a jazz spine.” explains Glasper.
The album will be released on February 28th on EMI/ Blue Note. Pre-order it here!
