Irish producer Sad Soul Circus (aka Finn Yowell) first emerged around a month ago with the dreamy and aptly named “Waves”, which cools down the summery vibes of the likes of Washed Out to form a sound that’s wonderfully deep and almost subaqueous. Following on from this comes his most recent effort, “Lost Ideas”, which has a sound much more akin to Star Slinger, with a choppy bass-heavy rhythm and sampled vocals. Citing similar influences such as Gold Panda and Mmoths, the 19 year-old has still managed to create something with a unique flavour, and with musical roots based in more traditional instruments such as the accordion, it’s safe to say he’s not just another copycat. Both tracks are available to download for free from his soundcloud, what’s not to love?

Gang Colours

June 2011 saw the 12″ release of an amazing EP from Gang Colours entitled “In Your Gut Like A Knife”. Though the name might suggest some kind of sonic assault, the reality was four tracks of lovely Gold Panda-esque electronica, that’s summed up pretty well on his page by “…Burial on a soft, sunny dancefloor…”, check it out here. Fastforward to the 27th February and we’ll see the release of his debut LP, “The Keychain Collection”, on Brownswood Recordings, with the first single “Fancy Restaurant” released a week ealier on 12″ accompanied by remixes from Machine Drum, Ifan Dafydd and Deft. Warm and soulful with a distinct RnB vibe, “Fancy Restaurant” is wonderfully chilled out and had me hitting the replay button over and over. Previews of the remixes should be around soon, and he’s also annouced his first live UK dates:

11th Feb – HMV Next Big Thing Show w/ Kwes – The Garage, London
7th March – The Castle, Manchester
8th March – Vortex, Dalston

Booddha (aka Niels van der Donk) hails from Amsterdam, and creates the kind of minimal-house inflected dubstep that’s been pushing it’s way to the forefront of the bass music scene, especially in the UK and Europe. Taking influence from some of our favourite acts such as Gold Panda, Sepalcure, Joy Orbison, SBTRKT and Zomby, his latest effort comes in the form of superb future-garage jam “Bellybutton Boogie”. It contrasts nicely with his earlier work, such as the brilliant title track from his upcoming EP “She Was Lost”, which is darker and more akin to the sound of Burial. The 5-track EP will be released for free at the end of January on his own label, Vresh, and snippets of the tracks are available on his soundcloud. Vresh also runs as a music blog and is well worth checking out. We’ll keep you updated on when the release is available, but for now enjoy these…
